Few interfaces have changed more often — or more radically — than the Xbox dashboard. History shows that its strategy for working in new features and services involved scrapping its previous interface, essentially asking you to re-learn how to use the machine and find your content. As this visual history points out, some of their ideas are seen in modern iterations of the dashboard and will be in updates to come and perhaps on future consoles, too.
This interface had a lot more to squeeze in than the comparatively sparse-yet-stylish dashboard found on the original Xbox.
Even so, it was tidy and easy to understand. That said, inspiration from this dashboard can be found on following updates if you look hard enough. Three years after the launch of the XboxMicrosoft wiped the slate clean with the NXE interface update. And with the advent of Netflix instant streaming and other entertainment-based apps, the Xbox was beginning its descent into interface madness, having to juggle gaming with other forms of entertainment on the dashboard. It started to look like a set-top box.
Remnants of the beloved blades could be found when you pressed the Xbox button on the controller. But on the dashboard, they were replaced in favor of each section being stacked on top of each other. Navigate to the one you want, then all of your content lived within its tile-based interface that you could scroll through from left to right. Some may have liked it, but not everyone did. It also introduced the ability to stream HD videos on Netflix, form parties on Xbox Live, and install games onto the hard drive for faster loading.
It wanted gamers to use the Kinect camera to get moving, and thus, the design of this new dashboard update made Kinect the centerpiece. Really, this was a minor visual update to the NXE. It still had the same overall look, structure, and navigation that the update introduced, but Microsoft worked in the ability to move around the dashboard with the Kinect RIP. Good : Nice to look at, brought back blade-style main navigation in a sense.
Restoring Original XBOX Dashboard
In a sense, this dashboard update merged blades with the NXE, letting you use the bumpers to shift between categories a la blades and navigate each of the colorful tiles within each section like you could in NXE. Under the hood, the update brought some important features, like cloud storage for game saves.

What I want to know is I have dropped them into the E: and tried to boot them from there but I get "Error 21". I would like to be able to accomplish this without having to go through yet another softmod as I have fried it twice in the last few days and like the setup I have with XBMC and would hate to have to open the bloody thing up again. Thanks for any help, much appreciated.
You can use the cheater softmod files located in my signature.
You need to first determine your version of xbox and download the correct set of files. You can download them at www. This will make sure you won't have any issues while ftping a whole new dash over to your xbox.
If you're using the dash that you are modifying it could easily freeze and could complicate this process. Then ftp my files over, if there's a C then put the contents of my C in your C. When everything is done transfering power off the xbox using the power button and then power on the xbox again and the xbox should boot avalaunch. In avalaunch you'll see an option at the bottom named "microsoft dash".
Just select it and you should see the ms dash. The rest is self explanatory. You can setup your games to run in i and setup your dash to display in i or p.
This way when you transfer files the screen doesn't show extremely small text. Anyway good luck and let me know if you have any other questions. C4RN1Sep 29, Hi C4Rn1 Thanks for your reply. The original Xbox is one of my favorite systems. In fact, it was the system that introduced me to gaming at the young age of five!
About 20 years later after its release, you can have even more fun on it then when it first came out.Draw the er diagram for the given scenario

Custom dashboards are what enable most of the features shown below — and there are many great ones available for this system. Being able to change and customize the interface sure is cool too, though. Most dashboards have support for different skins, or changing colors at the very least. For a long time this has been the crown jewel of Xbox softmodding. It can be installed either as an application or custom dashboard on a modded console.
XBMC was so successful that it eventually was ported to many other systems and became the program Kodiwhich is available on most modern systems without modification — including the raspberry pi and even the Xbox one!
At the time of writing this article, the software was last updated inwhich is pretty recent for a console from ! This can be done with certain tools such as DVD2Xbox or from custom dashboards that integrate this feature, such as UnleashX. DVD2Xbox is the recommended tool to use, as it applies patches required by certain games. Games can either be dumped to ISO format or Redump format, which extracts the games contents so that it can be played from your hard drive.
Most custom dashboards can load games off the hard drive on a softmodded Xbox. Upgrading the storage on a modded original Xbox is a good idea, and it can only be done on modified consoles. The stock hard drive in an original Xbox is only about 8GB, but it is possible to upgrade to pretty much anything larger.
Not sure how much benefit there is though. The drive I personally used was an old IDE drive I happened to have lying around from an older computer. Swapping drives can be a challenging process, and it took me several tries to clone my old hard drive to the new one. It can be done either using a computer or the Xbox itself; I recommend using the Xbox because it is a much more reliable method. Either way it requires plugging both your new drive and old drive into an IDE cable and running a program to clone and configure it correctly.Original Xbox Dashboard - Communication Voice
I plan on eventually writing a guide for this. This is one of my favorite things about having a modded original Xbox. Many custom dashboards and softmodding tools allow you to change the video mode of your Xbox. Oh yeah, of course you can play region-free games with a modded console! This is another key feature of Xbox modding and custom dashboards. You know what else you can do with a modded original Xbox, besides hacking the Xbox itself? Modifying games!
My favorite thing about modding Xbox games is enabling widescreen patches. Not all games have widescreen patches available, but a good amount do! The Halo games have had a large modding community, unsurprisingly. And there are even mods for one of my favorite games, Forza Motorsport.
These are just a few examples; there are plenty more mods and tools out there if you look for them! Finally, trainers are an important part of Xbox game modding! There's an Xbox and an Xbox One, but first there was just Xbox. The original Xbox. That's what this sub is for. Xbox-Hq Discord.
Which dashboard is best? Xbmc4Gamers in the Rocky5 extras disk is really neat, you can scroll through game covers. Same here. Gave an xbox to an older friemd bad with electronics so I gave him xbmc4gamers to make it easy.
Better believe i tucked a secret unleash x as an app to ftp and such. Call me crazy but i dont remember finding a way to actually ftp with xbmc for gamers. Maybe im just dumb I always had freezing issues using any variant of xbmc for ftp.
I thought it would take a year to transfer 1. How are you able to setup xbmc4gamers as default dash? How do you revert back to unleashX once xbmc4gamers is default dash?
I literally just installed it from the Rocky5 Softmod Extras Disk. Your Xbox must be softmodded first. I load it as an app when I need it. It even works in game if you have persistent softmod enabled, that was a neat discovery. I only see icons for the games in the default view, and when I change to game cover view it just shows the default Xbox icon for them all.
The other thing I need to work out is how o get other menus to show. Install it to E as normal, and use the XBE shortcut maker. Drop it in C and rename it according to your boot order. I'm pretty sure you just put the app at the root of E and not unders Applications folder if you softmod with jcrocky5 and it will be your default dash. Rocky has updated Emustation ftp on his latest test build, but I still use UX as it works great. The change log mentions timeouts iirc.
Easily the best option. It looks beautiful at p on my 4K screen anyways. Strange, I was running it in p the other day while editing XBE titles and changing settings because it made the text much more easily readable and had no issues. It's been almost two decades since the original Xbox launched in North America, and in that time, we've seen countless changes to the Xbox dashboard.
What started out as a primitive design has evolved into a variety of memorable and nostalgia-ridden layouts, so let's take a brief stroll down memory lane! The first Xbox dashboard arrived in with the release of the original Xbox, retaining a similar design throughout its lifespan.
Four years later, the launch of Xbox gave birth to the 'Blades' - a modern and intuitive layout, followed by the radically different New Xbox Experience in Finally, the Metro dashboard landed on Xbox inand has been the system's dashboard of choice ever since. The Xbox One has adopted a different approach to updating its dashboard, particularly in recent years, with Xbox Insiders receiving regular updates to sample ahead of a potential public release.
Because of this, the system has received far more incremental changes than the Xbox ever did. However, it's had its fair share of major updates as well. The first was the initial launch dashboard for Xbox One, which prioritised tiles and TV-focused features such as the now-absent Snap Mode.
The New Xbox Experience changed things drastically in with a faster design, while the dashboard altered its layout on multiple occasions, eventually setting on a similar design to the one we see today. With all of that in mind, we want to know — which is the best Xbox dashboard of all time?

Fraser has an unhealthy obsession for all things related to Telltale Games' The Walking Dead series, and has an intimate knowledge of sports games on Xbox One.
Blades, every time. It was clear, simple, and responsive, and then they went and did all that faffing about. AlexOlney Completely agreed. Blades were perfect. No taste, I tell 'ya. No taste whatsoever GhostXSlime I loved metro too. Current Xbox One dashboard is not bad imo. I only have experience with Xbox one and I wouldn't vote for any of the designs.
Switch dashboard gets my vote. The arguably had the best as a whole OS on any console. Pretty flexible for a system that came out in I have to go with Xbox metro since that's the only one I really know when it comes to the The original Xbox was great for it's time but wouldn't work now Xbox One I couldn't stand untill this recent update to it.
It took to many steps to play a game unlike say the PS4. Back to Xbox Metro, it was easy to navigate you were able to find what you were looking for quickly and there wasn't any extra steps needed to access stuff.
I like the latest Xbox One dashboard though.
I liked the Blades from the early days but the current Dashboard tops it. Not much clutter and very easy to navigate.Remember Me? What's New? Results 1 to 14 of I decided to power ON my original Xbox today, thing I haven't done since a while! Then immediately, the custom dashboard annoyed me, again. This custom dashboard is way too complicated, I don't care about going online Still working? Probably not. Oh, and import music CDs too.
How can I reset the dashboard?
Thanks for the help! I read somewhere to do that you power on the Xbox by hitting the disc tray eject button rather than the power button. Maybe that'll do the trick? You have to ftp inside the Xbox, or launch a file manager program, browse to C, and look carefully to the files inside. There must be a default. The modded bios checks if evoxdash.
It should be safe to rename it and reboot the xbox, so default. Be careful, though, if you don't know what you're doing it's better to leave it as it is. As an alternative, you can download "slayers evox auto installer", burn it, and choose the option to restore MS Dashboard. I see you can get it on torrent search sites.
